Sasa kurilensis

    Your Sasa kurilensis Striped is very nice. Is this form stable? Has stipes all the time, or only in the spring? Who is the source?


    My Kiakebono from F. Vaupel failed. Never had stripes. The same i have with Kiakebono from Jos. Never had stripes, only sometimes little yellow color on new leaves.

    i got my Anouk, Kiakebono and Striped from Jos. Kiakebono makes some stripes on new leafs, but they get green during the year. At a shaded place it keeps longer.

    Anouk is very similar to striped. The striped Form is quite stable, the pictures are made these days.

    My Kiakebono from Jos has smaller leaves then "normal Kurilensis" and sometimes made yellowish leaves, but not every year. Never had stripes. I have it in garden with shorter growing season, so maybe this form needs more wam conditions and longer season.

    Shimofuri is very good here. Around 2,5 m tall.

    Shimofuri is very good growing here too. Maybe even better than the normal kurilensis.

    We will see how Anouk and Kiakebono will grow in the future. Would be great to get updates in this thread

    Normal kurilensis is very vigorous here. Strong spreader. After 18 years is more then 2 m tall and occupy many m2.


    Shimofuri is slower spreader.




    What can I see is differnce in growing habit. When normal kurilensis grow in first years low, but strongly send rhizomes to the sides. Shimofuri grow higher and higher from the beggining, and go very slowly to the sides.




    If i compare morphology both, i am not sure if Shimofuri is clear kurilensis. Looks like hybrid or differend kind in my eyas.

    Die Schönheit der Kurilen ist atemberaubend! Hoffentlich bleibt das erhalten und wird nicht irgendwann zu Papier.

    Die knorrigen, uralten Baumgestalten scheinen Larix gmelinii var. japonica zu sein.
